Overview

The Marangu Route, often called the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the classic and oldest path up Kilimanjaro.

Known for its relative ease, well-established trail, and hut accommodations, it offers a comfortable yet rewarding climb suitable for trekkers who prefer structured lodging over camping.

Full Itinerary

Day 1:

Marangu Gate (1,860 m) → Mandara Hut (2,720 m)

Terrain & Vegetation: Begin your ascent through lush, dense rainforest teeming with wildlife including colobus monkeys, tropical birds, and unique flora. The trail meanders alongside streams and under a thick canopy of giant trees and vines.

Climate: Warm and humid with the possibility of afternoon showers, especially during the rainy seasons.

Camp: Mandara Hut offers rustic wooden dormitory-style huts with basic facilities. Its elevated position provides stunning views of the surrounding forest canopy and a cozy base to rest and prepare for higher elevations.

Day 2:

Mandara Hut (2,720 m) → Horombo Hut (3,720 m)

Terrain & Vegetation: Transition from dense rainforest into the moorland zone. The vegetation becomes sparser with giant lobelias, heath plants, and open landscapes offering panoramic views of Kilimanjaro’s slopes.

Climate: Noticeably cooler and drier as the altitude increases; expect crisp mountain air and stronger winds.

Camp: Horombo Hut is a spacious mountain hut located in the alpine desert zone. It provides dormitory accommodation and communal dining, where trekkers can enjoy warm meals and share stories. The hut serves as a key acclimatization stop.

Day 3:

Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

Activities: Take a short acclimatization hike to nearby landmarks such as Zebra Rocks or Mawenzi Hut (~4,000 m). These excursions help your body adjust to thinner air while offering spectacular views and photo opportunities.

Terrain: Rocky alpine desert terrain with panoramic vistas of Kilimanjaro’s towering peaks and valleys below.

Climate: Cold and windy; layering with warm clothing is essential.

Camp: Return to Horombo Hut for a second night, allowing your body to acclimate and prepare for the demanding summit push.

  • Trekking Time: 3–5 hours
  • Altitude: Between 3,700 and 4,000 m

Day 4:

Horombo Hut (3,720 m) → Kibo Hut (4,700 m)

Terrain & Environment: Trek across rocky, barren alpine desert with sparse vegetation and volcanic rock formations. The environment grows increasingly harsh with cold temperatures and strong winds.

Climate: Very cold, especially at night, with temperatures often dropping below freezing. Wind chill can be significant.

Camp: Kibo Hut is the final rest stop before the summit attempt. Accommodations are basic dormitories with limited facilities, but the location offers spectacular views of the crater rim.

Day 5:

Day 5: Summit Day — Kibo Hut (4,700 m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) → Horombo Hut (3,720 m)

Terrain: Summit push involves steep scree and rocky paths, often starting around midnight to reach Uhuru Peak by sunrise. Expect demanding physical and mental conditions.

Climate: Extremely cold at the summit with potential for snow and ice; high risk of altitude sickness. Weather can be unpredictable with strong winds and freezing temperatures.

Camp: Descend back to Horombo Hut for overnight rest. Depending on your schedule, some may choose to continue down to Marangu Gate this day.

  • Distance: ~6 km (3.7 miles) ascent + ~17 km (10.6 miles) descent
  • Trekking Time: 7–9 hours ascent, followed by 6–8 hours descent
  • Altitude Gain & Loss: 1,195 m ascent to summit, then 2,175 m descent

Day 6:

Optional Day 6: Horombo Hut → Marangu Gate (1,860 m)

Terrain: Mostly downhill trail passing through alpine moorland and re-entering rainforest as you approach the gate.

Climate: Warmer and more humid conditions as you descend to lower altitudes.

Finish: Celebrate your successful summit with a certificate ceremony at Marangu Gate, marking the completion of your climb. Transfers to Moshi or Arusha are typically arranged after.

  • Trekking Time: 5–6 hours
  • Altitude Loss: 1,860 m

Day 7:

Mweka Camp (3,100 m) → Mweka Gate (1,640 m)

Terrain: Mostly descending forest trail, steep in parts, leading to the park exit gate.

Climate: Warm and humid at lower elevations.

Finish: Celebrate your accomplishment with a certificate ceremony at Mweka Gate, then transfer back to Moshi or Arusha.

Additional Notes on the Marangu Route

  • Accommodation Style: Unique among Kilimanjaro routes, Marangu offers hut accommodations instead of camping, which may appeal to climbers preferring indoor shelter.
  • Popularity: Due to its relative ease and comfort, it is one of the most popular routes but can be busier, especially during peak climbing seasons.
  • Acclimatization: While shorter and less strenuous than other routes, the Marangu route’s success depends heavily on proper acclimatization; taking the extra day for hiking at Horombo is highly recommended.
  • Scenery: This route features beautiful contrasts from lush rainforest to alpine desert, with opportunities to see unique flora and fauna along the way.
