About the Park
Udzungwa Mountain National Park, often called the “African Galápagos”, is a biodiversity hotspot covering about 1,990 sq. km in southern Tanzania.
Unlike other safari destinations, Udzungwa is not about classic game drives but about hiking, trekking, and discovering a treasure trove of endemic plants and animals.
The park is part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage–recognized area, famed for its ancient forests, waterfalls, and unique wildlife.

The park is home to primates like the rare Udzungwa red colobus monkey and the Sanje mangabey, found only here. Its lush rainforests shelter elephants, buffaloes, duikers, and abundant birdlife, with over 400 recorded bird species.
The star attraction is the breathtaking Sanje Waterfall, which plunges 170 meters into the forest, creating a magical spot for hikers. The combination of wildlife, waterfalls, and tropical forest makes Udzungwa unique among Tanzanian national parks.

Hiking and Trekking
Udzungwa is a hiker’s paradise, offering trails that range from short forest walks to challenging multi-day treks.
The most popular is the trail to Sanje Waterfall, where you can enjoy scenic forest views and cool off at natural pools. More adventurous routes lead deep into the mountains, rewarding trekkers with panoramic views and untouched wilderness.
Bird Watching
With more than 400 species of birds, including several endemics like the Udzungwa forest partridge and the Rufous-winged sunbird, the park is a premier birding destination.
Birders can enjoy spotting a variety of forest species, raptors, and colorful sunbirds while trekking through different habitats.
Primate Watching
Udzungwa is one of the best places in Tanzania to observe primates in the wild.
Unique species like the Udzungwa red colobus and the Sanje mangabey are found only here. Watching these rare monkeys swing gracefully through the canopy is a highlight for many visitors.

Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit is during the dry season (June to October), when the trails are less slippery and hiking is easier. The wet season (November to April) brings lush greenery and active birdlife, ideal for bird watchers.
Weather Condition
Udzungwa has a tropical, humid climate. Temperatures average between 20–30°C during the day, while evenings are cooler in the mountains. Rain is more frequent from November to April, with mist often hanging over the forest canopy, adding to its mystique.
