Tour Overview
Experience the majestic Marangu Route on Mount Kilimanjaro, known for its scenic beauty and unique hut accommodations. This route offers the rare advantage of staying in mountain huts rather than tents, providing extra comfort in a challenging alpine environment. The Marangu Route is often called the “Coca-Cola Route,” balancing accessibility and adventure for those aiming to summit the highest peak in Africa.
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be transferred to your hotel in Arusha. In the evening, attend a comprehensive briefing from your head guide, who will review the Marangu Route itinerary, safety protocols, altitude acclimatization strategies, and packing essentials. This orientation ensures you’re well-prepared and allows for any last-minute gear adjustments before beginning the ascent.
Accommodation: Comfortable lodge in Arusha
Begin your adventure with a drive to Marangu Gate for registration. The trek starts in a lush rainforest, with sights and sounds of exotic flora and fauna, including blue monkeys and colobus monkeys. The trail is well-marked, making it accessible for hikers of varying experience levels, with moderate inclines. As you ascend, the environment shifts from dense tropical rainforest to moorland.
Distance: 8 km
Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
Elevation Gain: 830 m
Trail Conditions: Wet, potentially slippery paths through the rainforest
Highlights: Rich biodiversity, scenic canopy views
Accommodation: Mandara Hut, shared dormitory-style huts
Note: Mandara Hut is equipped with running water, providing additional comfort as you adjust to higher altitudes.
Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail ascends into the moorland zone, offering sweeping views of both Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. The landscape becomes more rugged, with unique flora like giant lobelias and groundsels, which are only found in the high-altitude regions of East Africa. This day is essential for acclimatization, as you’ll gain significant altitude.
Distance: 12 km
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Elevation Gain: 1,020 m
Trail Conditions: Moderate terrain with short, steep sections
Highlights: Moorland flora, expansive views of Mawenzi and Kibo
Accommodation: Horombo Hut, shared dormitories
Tip: Hydrate well and maintain a steady pace to prevent altitude-related issues. This gradual ascent is designed to help with acclimatization.
Acclimatization is key to success on Kilimanjaro, and today is dedicated to helping your body adjust to the thinner air. After breakfast, take an optional hike to Zebra Rocks, a striking rock formation with distinctive black and white stripes. This hike allows you to experience higher altitudes and then return to a lower elevation for sleeping, a proven method to enhance acclimatization.
Optional Distance: 5 km round trip
Elevation Gain: 300 m (during the hike)
Highlights: Unique Zebra Rocks, high-altitude hiking preparation
Accommodation: Horombo Hut, shared dormitories
Health Advisory: Be attentive to any symptoms of altitude sickness, such as headaches or nausea. The guide will conduct regular health checks.
Today’s trek takes you across the “Saddle,” a vast, barren stretch of alpine desert between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. The landscape is stark and stunning, with little vegetation due to the high altitude. The temperature can drop significantly, so it’s essential to dress in warm, layered clothing. Upon reaching Kibo Hut, you’ll rest, have an early dinner, and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.
Distance: 9 km
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
Elevation Gain: 983 m
Trail Conditions: Dry and rocky terrain, exposed to wind and cold
Highlights: The Saddle’s unique desert landscape, views of both Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks
Accommodation: Kibo Hut, basic dormitory-style huts
Preparation for Summit: Ensure all necessary gear (headlamp, warm layers, gloves) is ready. Rest as much as possible, as the summit attempt begins at midnight.
The ascent begins at midnight, allowing you to reach the summit around sunrise. The initial trek to Gilman’s Point (5,685 m) is steep and challenging, often through loose scree. From Gilman’s, continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Witness a breathtaking sunrise over the clouds before beginning your descent back to Kibo Hut for a brief rest. Continue descending to Horombo Hut for the night.
Distance: 15 km (up and down)
Total Hiking Time: 12-15 hours (summit and descent combined)
Elevation Gain: 1,192 m (ascend)
Elevation Loss: 2,175 m (descend)
Trail Conditions: Steep, rocky, and cold, especially near the summit
Highlights: Spectacular sunrise, panoramic views from Uhuru Peak, rewarding sense of achievement
Accommodation: Horombo Hut, communal dormitories
Summit Advisory: The ascent is demanding due to altitude and cold. Guides are trained to ensure safety and assist with regulating.
Your final day on the mountain entails a steady descent through moorland and lush rainforest zones back to Marangu Gate. This is a great occasion to take in the diverse flora and fauna one last time. At the gate, you’ll receive your certificate of achievement, celebrating the successful Kilimanjaro climb. Transfer back to Arusha for a relaxing evening.
Distance: 20 km
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
Elevation Loss: 1,850 m
Trail Conditions: Gradual descent, transitioning from alpine desert to rainforest
Completion Ceremony: Certificate of achievement presentation at Marangu Gate
